Description and features

The curing mechanism between Vicura MC-68 (Pyromellitic Acid Diphenyl Imidazoline Salt) forms a complex with the epoxy resin. Two parallel processes occur: the direct reaction between the imidazoline and the epoxy group, and the homopolymerization of the epoxy resin catalyzed by Vicura MC-68. Unlike most powder coating systems, where the optimal ratio between the crosslinker and the binder is close to the stoichiometric ratio, the optimal ratio for Vicura MC-68 is typically determined empirically. For epoxy resins commonly used in powder coatings (with epoxy equivalent weights between 700 and 1000), manufacturers recommend starting with 8.0 – 10.0% of Vicura MC-68.

Application

Vicura MC-68 (Pyromellitic Acid Diphenyl Imidazoline Salt) is an organic salt of polycarboxylic acid and cyclic amidine, used as a crosslinker in matt epoxy and polyester/epoxy hybrid powder coatings. It produces a more pronounced matting effect than Vicura MC-55. When used alone, Vicura MC-68 achieves gloss levels below 10 (Gardner 600) in matt epoxy powder coatings. To increase gloss, manufacturers can partially replace it with the “high gloss crosslinker” Vicura MC-31, with the optimal ratio determined experimentally. In polyester/epoxy coatings, gloss levels between 10 and 70 (Gardner 600) are achieved by replacing part of the polyester with Vicura MC-68 and increasing the epoxy resin content. The curing reaction with epoxy groups begins above 180°C, and higher temperatures accelerate the curing process, bringing it in line with typical thermosetting powder coatings.
